Rosetta Stone offers Standard Irish.
Version 3 Irish Level 1 Personal Edition
Rosetta Stone Irish is one of the oldest living languages in Europe. Speakers of Celtic languages, the family of languages from which Irish developed, arrived in present day Ireland between 3000 and 1200 BC. But it wasn't until 600AD that the language developed many of the characteristics of modern Irish, including the possibility for consonants to be pronounced two different ways.

It's thought that many developments in the language reflect the influence of Latin, as the changes occurred at the same time that Ireland became predominantly Christian and are similar to that language. Viking invasions in the 8th through 10th centuries brought an influx of Scandinavian words into Irish.

At its most popular, Irish was spoken throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. In the late 12th century, however, Middle English began to supersede it in many places. Since the 19th century, Irish has been a minority language but an important part of Irish national identity. It is the national and first official language of Ireland and is also an official language of the European Union.

Currently almost half of the population in Ireland speaks Irish as a first or second language. Caighde '¡n, a combination of Irish's three main dialects, is the standard written form of Irish, which you'll learn with the Rosetta Stone. You'll learn how to speak with an accent similar to what's spoken in Munster, the southernmost of Ireland's four provinces. That accent is considered relatively easy to pronounce for people learning Irish.

Whether in the Republic of Ireland's historic capital of Dublin, Northern Ireland's up-and-coming first city of Belfast or the beautiful countryside, Irish culture is enthralling. In addition to Ireland's renowned stout beers, Irish pubs feature lively crowds dancing and singing along to traditional music. Visit one and locals will befriend you in no time. And, of course, you already know about how much fun St. Patrick's day can be.
